VANCOUVER, Wash. - Alma Harms, 93, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Memorial services will be in Grace Lutheran Church in Vancouver. Burial will be in McPherson City Cemetery in McPherson, Kan.

Alma Harms, a native of the Oklahoma Panhandle and a descendent of homesteading parents, was born June 10, 1915, in Optima, Okla., to August and Martha Gieselmann.

Alma married Bernhard A. Harms in 1938 in Hooker, Okla., and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. During the war, they lived in McPherson and later owned a cattle and wheat farm north of Hooker from 1945 to 1976. Upon retiring, they returned to McPherson. After her husband's death, she moved to Fritch, Texas, and later to Dumas, Texas, where she lived until 2008.

Alma was baptized in July 1915 and confirmed in April 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hooker. She and her husband were charter members of Grace Lutheran Church in McPherson, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2005.

Sewing and quilting were Alma's lifelong hobbies. She designed and sewed many quilts for her family, friends and Lutheran World Relief.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernhard; a son, Delvin; her parents; a brother, Otto Gieselmann; and two sisters, Esther Fletcher and Hulda Ukens.

Survivors include a daughter, Renetta Lindsey and husband John of Vancouver; a daughter-in-law, Paula Harms of Fritch; two sisters, Ruth Kreutziger and husband Harlan of Dumas and Wilma Harms of London, Ark.; two granddaughters, Sabra Lindsey and Lemecia Tollefson, both of Vancouver; three grandsons, Lance Lindsey of Bend, Ore., Clint Harms of Amarillo, Texas, and Greg Harms of Fritch; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to American Heart Association, 2514 82nd St., Suite B, Lubbock, TX 79423; American Cancer Society, 3915 S. Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109; or Kaiser Permanente Hospice, 2701 N.W. Vaughn St., Suite 140, Portland, OR 97210.
