Wife of president and governor. Margaret Moffette (Lea) Houston, third wife of General Sam Houston, was the "First Lady" of the Republic of Texas during Sam Houston's second term as president of the Republic of Texas (1841-1844), and "First Lady" of the state of Texas during Sam Houston's term as governor of the state of Texas (1859-1861). Born in Marion, Alabama to Temple and Nancy (Moffette) Lea, she married Sam Houston despite her mother's objections. She died in Independence, Washington County, Texas during the yellow fever epidemic of 1867. Books written about her include, "Sam Houston's Wife" by William Seale and "Star of Destiny: The Private Life of Sam and Margaret Houston" by Madge Thornall Roberts and Randolph B. Campbell. Many of her letters were published in "The Personal Correspondence of Sam Houston" by Sam Houston and Madge Thornall Roberts.
