Son of Eliza Ann Payne & Duff. Brother of Major Charles Jones Green, also of 47th Virginia Infantry.

Residence: Stafford County VA; a 35 year-old Farmer.
Enlisted on 5/2/1861, he was commissioned into Field & Staff VA 47th Infantry as a Lt. Colonel.
On rolls 3/15/1862 (place not stated)
Not reelected 5/1/1862; dropped from rolls.
Serving as Volunteer Aide-de-Camp on General Pender's staff, he was Killed In Action at Gaines' Mill, VA., while trying to rally a regiment; shot dead from horse by 2 bullets while carrying Colors in his hand.

The 47th Infantry Regiment was formed in June, 1861, with men recruited in Caroline, Middlesex, Essex, and Stafford counties.
