James was born the youngest child to John Theisen and Mary (Devaney) Theisen. From his first sight of a bi-plane, he was fascinated with flying. He eventually did obtain his pilot's license and enjoyed many years flying his own private planes. His most "famous" was an ice-plane; instead of wheels, it was fitted with runners so that they could travel the Mississippi during the winter.
Jim and his wife Evelyn raised three children and lived a good life. There wasn't a lot of money, but that didn't matter. Good times were plenty and that's what counts.
Jim was also an accomplished musician, being self-taught and able to play by ear. Many times he entertained family by playing either the piano, guitar, ukulele or accordian.
He was a historian of Dubuque in her heyday. One of our current authors about Dubuque would often visit with Jim and collect stories about how Dubuque was at the beginning of the 20th century.
He is a man greatly missed by all who knew him for he never had a bad word to say, and always had a quick smile.
