Staff Sgt. Albert E. Nichols, 40, U.S. Air Force, died at his home at Otis Air Force Base, Buzzard's Bay, Mass., yesterday.

Base officials said last night that he collapsed at his home and was dead by the time a physician reached the house. An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death. Nichols had not been previously ill.

Two weeks ago he had visited Wilmington where his father, Frederick J. Nichols Sr., has been seriously ill.

He had servied in the Air Force in World War II and earned the Purple Heart in the European Theater of Operations.
His plane was shot down in the Battle of the Bulge and he suffered shrapnel wounds from German anti-aircraft fire and injuries in the crash. He held a presidential citation and other decorations.

After a short period of civilian employment following World War II, he re-enlisted in the Air Force and made it a career.

He was a graduate of Wilmington High School.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ella Marie Ogle Nichols; three daughters, Elizabeth Carol and Linda; and two sons, Robert and Albert, all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick J. Nichols Sr. of Wilmington; a brother, Frederick J. Nichols Jr., retired lieutenant, Wilmington Bureau of Police, Middleboro Manor; and a sister, Mrs. Evelyn E. Hayes, Elmira, NY
