M. Barbara Donnelly passed suddenly and peacefully on Nov. 22, 2022, in Frederick, Maryland, where she had recently moved to be near family. She was born on Jan. 31, 1924, to Ralph and Hazel Thornburg on the family farm outside of Culver.

She spent virtually her entire life in the Marshall County area. In 1945, she married Alfred Donnelly, a Culver Academy instructor, and together they raised three children.

Barbara's life centered on family, but she was also a longtime member of Culver Wesley United Methodist Church, having served as a church officer and assistant manager of its thrift shop. She also spent time on the Culver Public Library Board and was active in Tri Kappa social service organization and the Culver Academy faculty wives activities. She was a skilled knitter, great cook, an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers, and enjoyed her friends and neighbors.

Barbara's strong faith helped her deal with life's challenges, the biggest of which was the untimely 1975 death of her second child, Lela Hildebrandt. Barbara is survived by two children: Shaun (wife Kathryn) in Maryland, and Susan (husband Kent) in Oregon, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, her husband Al, and daughter Lela.
