Joseph P. "Joe Mort" Martorana, 57, of Upper Deerfield Township died suddenly at his home early Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 2008.
Joe was the owner of Martorana Construction and also owned Martorana Farms on Rosenhayn Avenue in Upper Deerfield Township. A lifetime area resident, he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late Nicholas "Nick" and Lucy (Chiarulli) Martorana. He graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1970. In 1981, he established his construction business and in addition to his numerous construction projects, he enjoyed farming for the last eight years. An avid hunter, Joe was a member of the Rosenhayn Gun Club and was also a member of the Eastern Bowmen of Bridgeton/Rosenhayn. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Rosenhayn. He particularly enjoyed helping the young people of the area and spent several seasons as a coach at the Cohansey Soccer Club.
He is survived by one daughter, Elena K. Martorana of Melbourne, Fla., and her fiancé Brian Griggs; his companion, Lisa Ann Gabriel; five sisters, Anna Springfield (Len) of Upper Deerfield Township, Theresa Williamson (Ken) of Winter Springs, Fla., Lucille Martorana of Vineland, Rita Olivio (George) of Deerfield Township and Mary Martorana (fiancé Ron Overstreet) of Upper Deerfield Township; one brother, Nicholas Martorana of Deerfield Township and sister in-law Peggy Martorana; seven nephews and nieces, Michael Springfield, Michelle Peterson (Steve), Tara Speranza (Mike), Jennifer Scythes (Jason), Nicholas Bundy (Kelly) and Zachary and Jared Martorana; and three great-nieces and two great-nephews. Joe is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral, which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, and will be followed by a 10 a.m. funeral liturgy at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Morton Avenue, Rosenhayn.
The interment will be made at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rosenhayn.
Friends will be received from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and also from 7:30 until 9 a.m. Saturday.
