Father: William Shoemaker Sr (1834-1870)

Mother: Mary (Snider) Shoemaker(b. 1833, NC)

William was in the House of Refuge in June of 1880, working in the chair shop. He was 18 years old.

In 1870, William was with his mother (Mary) and three siblings in Madison county.

His father fought in the Civil War and was initially labeled as a "deserter" during the war. After the war, the state of Indiana determined that he had not deserted. In fact, he had been furloughed by the regimental surgeon and returned home. He was supposed to return after 30 days, but did not. Another physician determined that he was unfit for continued service, but this status did not make back to his commanding officer. After the war, he met a "board of officers" in Detroit (HQ of Dept of Ohio) which determined he was not a deserter, but that he was AWOL - and then dropped that charge. He was ordered to report to the "muster out officer" for the state of Indiana for a discharge.

His mother re-married twice. One marriage ended in the husband's death and the other in divorce.
