There is some speculation that the Key West Porter family is distantly related to Commodore David Porter, who, following the treaty with Spain in 1818, claimed Key West and the Florida Keys for the United States government in 1827. There is a house at 429 Caroline St. which was where Dr. Joseph Y. Porter, was born and raised. The classical beauty is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it boasts a mansard roof, which is unusual for Key West's historic district.

Dr. Porter studied medicine in Philadelphia and served initially as an Army doctor stationed at Ft. Jefferson. Later he was instrumental in establishing hospitals during yellow fever epidemics and he became Florida's first health officer.
