JOHN GARWOOD
John Garwood was born 4th mo 9th d 1740, the son of Daniel and Susannah (Collins) Garwood; died May 22, 1819, Perry Twp., Logan Co., Ohio; married 1) Esther (Hester) Haines, the daughter of Carlile (sic) and Sarah (Matlack) Haines, Mar. 6, 1764, (lic), Burlington Co., N.J. She was born Nov. 5, 1755; died Dec. 20, 1811. Both are buried in the Curl or Darby Creek Cemetery, Zane Twp., Logan Co., between East Liberty and Middleburg. He married 2) Feb. 20, 1818, Mrs. Ann Branson.
According to Spencer W. Garwood, John and Esther Garwood went to Virginia about 1764; in 1768 John bought land from Joseph Poindexter and James Kennerly in Culpeper Co., Va., now in Rappahannock Co., near Washington, Va. The first purchase was for 180 acres on the North Fork of the Rush River for £ 140 and the second purchase was for land on the south side of the river with a messuage tenement (house) for £ 31 10 sh. witnessed by Ezekiel and Abigail Haines and Abraham Haines, brother and sister-in-law and uncle of Esther (Haines) Garwood. In 1787 and 1788 he bought more land there. The 1787 purchase was from George Calvert and the property contained an old burying ground in the orchard, excepted in the purchase. In 1788 and in 1794 he procured more land.
Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Society of Friends, Frederick Co., Va., records the removal of membership of John and Esther Garwood and children, Hope and Sarah, from Eversham M.M. to Hopewell, 9th mo 2nd d 1771. The records also show that John was a Committee member at Hopewell and in 1778 he subscribed £ 5 for benefit of the Indians, former owners of the land. The same year Culpeper Meeting was held at the home of John Garwood, on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Birth records of the John Garwood family are in the Crooked Run M.M. records. Crooked Run M.M. was near Strasburg, now in Warren Co., Va.
John Garwood is listed on "the militia classes in Culpeper Co., for Jan. 1781, for recruiting this states quota of Troops to serve in the Continental Army" #57.
To escape the problem of slavery and to obtain better land, John Garwood bought property in Sect 28, T12 R2, Dec. 22, 1802, recorded at the Stuebenville Land Office, Columbiana, Ohio. In April 1803, John and his son Thomas visited the place, and found it all under water, due to the spring flooding, so they went to see Job and John Sharp, nephews of Esther (Haines) Garwood who settled in now Logan Co., Ohio. Here John found land to his liking and so became the first settler of Perry Twp., Logan Co., Ohio. Logan County was organized from Champaign Co., Ohio, in 1817.
Apr. 2, 1805, John Garwood and his wife Esther, Levi Garwood and wife Sarah, and Daniel Garwood sell 449 acres of land on the east side of the Rush River, Culpeper Co., Va., to Philip Slaughter of Culpeper, for $6,300.00.
John and Esther Garwood, with children Deborah and Lott are granted certificates of removal from Crooked Creek Meeting to Miami Meeting 5th mo 4th d 1805. The covered wagon used on the journey to Ohio was later featured in parades and pageants at East Liberty and Zanesfield.
Jan. 25, 1808, John Garwood of Champaign Co., bought 800 acres of land on Otter Creek, for $1,600.00.
June 3, 1808, he bought another 800 acres on Beaver Run for $1,000.00.
Shortly after John Garwood had settled, he built a mill on Otter Creek and the place became known as Garwood's Mills. Then in 1834 a town was laid out and the name changed to East Liberty.
Oct. 1, 1825, the estate of John Garwood shows shaving tools, "pare" of spectacles and case, money scales, medicine, lock and key, inkstand, box of wafers, warming pan, man's saddle, saddle bags, cross cut saw, grindstone, clock and case, desk (was this the desk bequeathed to him in 1768 by uncle John Collins?), trunk, 10 kettles, books, arm chair, bellows, fire tongs, sheep, cattle, horse and other sundries.
In 1805 the John Garwood Family of thirteen children settled in the area that later would be called East Liberty, Ohio. There activities were responsible for the town of East Liberty. They built Garwood Mill near their home.
