Ole Olsen Bergan was born November 4, 1823, in Rollag, Numedal, Norway to Ola Nilsson Bergan (1792-1874) and Angjers Olsdatter Landsverk (1794-1881). He was one of eight children, of which two died when young. Ole was married December 27, 1848, in Rollag, Norway to Berget Halvosdatter Valle.

Ole Olsen Bergan and his wife, Berget, along with their first child, Ole, who was born March 17, 1849 in Numedal, Norway, left from Drammen, Norway on the ship Christiana and arrived in New York on July 16, 1850.

The Ole Olsen Bergan family moved to Rock County in the Janesville, Wisconsin area. Here their next three sons were born: Halvor on Jan 8, 1851; Nels on April 1, 1853, and Lars on Oct 1, 1854. For a short time the family lived in Boone Twsp, Boone County, IL, but moved back to Rock County.

On June 21, 1855, The Ole Olsen Bergan family applied for a Patent and received title to a (40 acre) homestead in Clayton County, Iowa, near Gunder. It was here their last child, Knudt Bergan, was born Oct 30, 1858.

Ole Olsen Bergan served in the Civil War with the Union Army. He died April 24, 1866 at the age of 42 years. It is unknown where he died, but he is buried at the Norway Lutheran Church cemetery near St. Olaf, Iowa, beside his wife, who died April 24, 1887. When Ole died, their oldest son was 17 years old, and the youngest was 7.

**NOTE**
On all of Ole's Civil War paperwork, his name was listed as Ole Olsen or Oleson. His sons all carried the Bergan name except Nels, who followed the Norwegian custom of taking his father's first name as his last name and added "son" (Oleson).His name has been found as Olson, Olsen, and Oleson and also as Ole Olson Bergan. He was a Civil War veteran who died of his wounds after he was discharged.
