EAGLE LAKE - Katharine B. "Kitty" Brown, 93, wife of the late Theodore R. "Teddy" Brown passed away Friday evening, Feb. 18, 2005, at a Fort Kent hospital. She was born June 28, 1911, in Eagle Lake to Michael C. and Phoebe (Martin) Burns. She graduated from the Madawaska Training School and initially taught in a one room school house in Winterville. She married Teddy in 1940, and lived in Augusta with her husband, father, and mother until 1946, when they moved back to Eagle Lake. She taught for 33 years in the Eagle Lake school system before retiring in 1972. Many of her students have since visited her through the years thanking her for how she contributed to their lives. In retirement, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and observing the news which satisfied her drive to keep gaining and using her knowledge to retain a sharp mind. That knowledge was an asset to providing information to the Eagle Lake Historical Society and other interested parties to events and facts related to the history of the area and its people. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was a member of the Maine State Retirement Teachers Association (Aroostook Chapter) Alumni of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Catholic Order of Forestors, St. Joseph's Court of Eagle Lake for more than 50 years, and a communicant at St. Mary's parish in Eagle Lake. In addition to both her parents she was predeceased by her husband in 1981; and her brother, Louis Burns in 2003. She is survived by four sons, John of Eagle Lake, Robert of Biddeford, Philip and his wife, Toshie of South Portland, and Joseph of Windsor, Conn.; one daughter, Betsy LaPlante and her husband, Richard, of Mapleton; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home in Fort Kent and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of departure for Eagle Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eagle Lake with the Rev. Bill Labbe officiating. Spring burial will be in the parish cemetery, May 16, 2005. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, PO Box 688, Caribou, ME 04736.
