The son of John and Mary (Gray) York, Marion was born in Giles County, Tennessee, and moved as a boy with his family to Lentzville, Limestone County, Alabama. Here, he married local Mary Ann Perry Lentz on December 12, 1854. They had four children together: William, Louise, Amanda, and Susan. He was a blacksmith. The Civil War broke after Susan's birth, and being a unionist, Marion joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV along with his cousin-in-law, Abraham Lentz. He saw little battle, catching rubeola shortly after enlisting. He was moved to Nashville Hospital #8, and died there.PVT E1 TENN CAV
