Believed to be the son of Judah/Judith Fanning Brandon and Micajah Snead. Moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee about 1827. Children: Sarah "Sally"(married George Lockhart); Josiah "Joe" (married Nancy Bolton); Micajah (b. 1833 d.1874,married Lucinda Long); Benjamin Franklin "Frank"(married Bethiah Bolton); Mary (married William King); James M. never married; Judah, died before 1850; Martha married Simon Mock (brother of Joseph Q Mock who married Sarah Snead Lockhart's daughter, Margaret Malinda Lockhart); Rebecca, never married; and Abby, died as an infant.

1830 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, Image 67, Benjamin L. is listed as about 30 years of age with two children under 5 which were Sarah and Josiah "Joe". There was one other female within the same age group as Elocky (20-30)and this "extra" female is also listed with the family in the 1840 Census. Living near Ben and Elocky was Micajah Snead age being between 50-60 and one female between the age of 60-70. These are assumed to be the parents of Benjamin Lee Sneed. Note: There was also a Micajah Sneed living in Halifax County, Virginia during the same time period which this researcher believes was probably a brother as next door to this Micajah is Byrd Sneed, both names were carried on down to Benjamin Lee's sons. Byrd Snead's Death Registration lists his father as Micajah Snead and his mother as Judy.

He was called "Bennie". According to family descendant, Lorraine Snead Guilliams, Bennie was a schoolteacher both in Tenn and Missouri. He was also a weaver as in baskets, a craft carried on down two generations. He held the office of Justice of the Peace in Gentry County, Missouri in 1860. (Ref. Grover Snead)

(Ref: Grover Snead) Through the W.P.A. compilations in the 1930's, we find no record of any Snead/Sneed having been buried in Jefferson County, Tennessee. However, one must remember that often people were buried without headstones, and records of who they were long disappeared. Missouri Gravestones give Sarah's birth as 1826 and all censuses do agree that her place of birth was Virginia. Josiah was born in 1828 in Tennessee. We can therefore estimate that Benjamin and Elocky moved to Tennessee about 1827.

The Jefferson County, Tennessee Land Records show the purchase of only one acre by Benjamin Snead from Joseph Roper by Warranty Deed on Dumplin Creek*. Date of deed: 7/17/1837 Recorded 4/8/1839 in Record Volume U, page 425. (* See the Minutes of the Dumplin Creek Baptist Church attended by Micajah Snead/Sneed.) Benjamin Snead sold 33 1/3 acres on Bays Mountain for $50 to Hugh Van Houser by Warranty Deed dated May 12, 1841 and recorded on August 18, 1841 in Record Volume W, page 396. Source: Grover Snead

1840 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee: 1 male under 5 (James M. 1837); 2 males 5-9 (Micajah 1832 and Benj F. 1835); 1 male 10-14 (Josiah 1829); 1 male 30-39 (Benjamin ) 1 female under 5 (Mary E. 1839); 1 female 10-14 (Sarah 1826); 2 females 40-49 (Elocky and who? (Note: in the 1830 census these two females were listed in the 20-30 range.)

James M. Age 14 Born in TN

We do not know how many wagons and how many families left Tennessee headed for Missouri. We know that Benjamin & Elocky, Josiah and Nancy Snead and George and Sarah (Snead) Lockhart moved together. We believe that Nancy's sister, Bathiah and mother Sarah moved with them. Additionally, Bethiah Ellen (Josiah's daughter) according to her death certificate was born January 1, 1854 in Buchanan County, Mo, Therefore we can reasonably estimate that they began their trek in 1853. By today's modern highways, that trip from the area where we know Ben & Elocky lived in Tennessee to Gentry County, Missouri is around 900 miles. If they could make 10 miles per day, it would have taken them at least 3 months to traverse which meant they arrived as winter was approaching in Gentry County, Missouri.

The 1860 Federal Census for Gentry County, Missouri were partially burned in a courthouse fire and only the Lockharts and Josiah Snead's family were found listed. However, because other records have been located, we know that Ben and Locky were already in Gentry County before 1860.
