Joseph P. Jones, 82, Civil War Vet, Dies; Held County Office

Joseph P. Jones, 83, civil war veteran and a pioneer resident of McLean county, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Hospital. He made his home at 401 1/2 East Front street.

He was born in Newark, Licking county, Ohio in 1847 and came to McLean county in 1864. He located on a farm south of the city where he lived unti 1870 when he married to Hannah Crawford, Bloomington who died five years ago. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Piatt county where they lived until 1889, when they moved to Bloomington. The family lived at 820 Mill street for more than 30 years, but in later years Mr. Jones made his home with his children.

Mr. Jones claimed to be the youngest Civil war veteran of the city. He enlisted in 1863 in Company I, One Hundred Twenty-Ninth Ohio Volunteer infantry and served throughout the war. He served fo two terms as tax collector of Bloominton township and was active in political affars in the city and county.

He is survived by four children, Arthur Jones, superintendent of the county farm; Rolla Jones and Mrs. l. L. Comstock, Bloomington and Mrs. Samuel G. Smith, Anchor. He leaves nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
