Mary Catherine “Kitty” Dye was the second child born to Hiram and Sarah Helen Lewman Dye. She and her siblings, John and Martha, were the first full generation of the Dye family to be born in Vermilion County. Their father had moved with his parents from Fleming County, Kentucky when he was sixteen years old. Troubles in Kentucky led them to the rich black soil and promises of a new beginning in Central Illinois. Hiram was industrious and worked hard to build a respectable life of his own with Kitty’s mother. By the time she was 20, and betrothed to Albert H. Gibbs, the family was prosperous.

Kitty and Albert were married on October 10, 1883. They raised two sons (Fred and Wilbur) and two daughters (Nora and Addie) in and around Indianola, Illinois. They had a nice farm in the village of Riola. That homestead and barn survive to this day. Albert was a farmer, brick mason and grocer. The couple was happily married with children who adored them both. Kitty suffered with edema when she was in her early 50’s. The swelling condition worsened, and she was taken to Augustana Hospital in Chicago. Despite the best medical interventions of the day, she died of “dropsy” or congestive heart failure. She is buried in the Gibbs family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in Indianola beside her husband and near her children. Her loss was grieved throughout the lives of her family. I remember my grandmother, Nora, keeping her picture on a chest of drawers in the bedroom. Her eyes would tear up when she spoke of her “dear Mama”.
