Joseph McDonald and wife, prominent young people of the Acton neighborhood and quite well known in this city and over the northern part of Shelby County, were killed Tuesday evening in Acton, when their automobile was struck and demolished by the Knickerbocker, the Big Four Passenger train due in this city about 7 o’clock. Both bodies were mangled, being carried for several hundred feet on the front of the engine before the train could be stopped. Mr. McDonald had been delivering coal in the motor truck and he and Mrs. McDonald had just started home when the accident occurred. A number of Shelbyville persons were passengers on the train. Mr. McDonald was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McDonald, who live about a half a mile south of Acton. His wife was the former Miss Blanche Tressler, of Connersville, and they had been living in Indianapolis since their marriage, which was solemnized about three years ago, until two months ago, when they removed to their late home, south of Acton. They leave a child, nine months old, which was at the home of its grandparents, Wednesday, having been left there by Mrs. McDonald, who had spent the day in Acton. Mr. McDonald was a nephew of Mrs Will Ray, of West Mechanic Street, and of Will McDonald, of West South Street, this city. James Alley was engineer and Pat Maloney conductor on the train, which has killed five persons within a week, the two at Acton, E. H. Burks of Irvington, in this city last Friday, and another couple at Lafayette last Sunday. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were taken to the home of Mrs. Roy Murphy, a sister of Mrs. McDonald, and an inquiry was begun by Deputy Coroner Barnes, of Southport, who later turned the case over to Coroner Poole, of Indianapolis. Both Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were about 25 years old. The funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon.
