Elroy Avery was an author, historian, lecturer, scientist and educator. He was born in Erie, Monroe County, Michigan to Caspar H. and Dorothy Putnam. When he was 17 he volunteered as a private in the Civil War, also serving as a correspondent for the Detroit Daily Tribune. Avery entered the University of Michigan in 1867 earning his PhB degree in 1971. He married educator Catherine Hitchcock Tilden on July 2, 1870. Soon after graduation Elroy was appointed Superintendent of East Cleveland Schools, becoming principal of East High School in 1872 and principal of Cleveland Normal School in 1878.
Avery wrote high school text books on physical science, as well as several histories, including Cleveland in a Nutshell and History of Cleveland and Its Environs. He served on city council and in the Ohio State Senate. He founded the Children's Fresh Air Camp in 1890, serving as its president for 13 terms beginning in 1895. In 1905 Elroy and 11 others studied the Cleveland public schools. After retiring in 1919, Elroy moved to New Port Richey. He became the first mayor of New Port Richey and the first president of the First State Bank of New Port Richey. Elroy died in Dade City Florida in 1935 and was buried in Knollwood Cemetery in Cleveland.
