Son of William C. Bell and Idris Fickle Bell. Dr. Bell graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, then from the University of Washington. He attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, and in that city met his future wife, Margaret Moody, a registered nurse. The married in Seattle during World War II.
Dr Bell was the chief surgical resident at Boston City Hospital before moving to New York, where he became Head of Thoracic Surgery at the VA Hospital. In 1956 the Bells moved to Seattle. Dr Bell became Chief of Surgery for the VA Hospital, going on to become a professor of surgery at the University of Washington Medical School.
Dr. Bell served in the United States Navy and served as a troop ship doctor. He then joined the U. S. Army Reserves Medical Corps and subsequently retired from the Army as a colonel.
The Bells moved to Whidbey Island in 1970 where he continued to work on the Joint Accrediation Committee for five years. Dr. and Mrs. Bell were married nearly 60 years when she preceeded him in death. The Bells had one daughter, Barbara, and two sons, Mark and Christopher.
