born in Grayson Co to
Joseph Fred Byrd and
Gertrude Eugenia Fields.
They moved to Dinwiddie
Co abt 1918. They had
moved because Fred's
brother, Aldine Kieffer
was already settled in
Dinwiddie near McKenney.
He promised his brother
that it was excellent farm
land with no hills and rocks.
It was told that Iris Allene
had said it was just like the
"Beverley Hillbillies" with
her dad's model-a-truck loaded
down with all they could carry.
Her and Edith had walked by the
truck all the way down the hills
just in case the brakes gave out
and her dad had to stop and adjust
the brakes and cool them down at
the bottom of each hill.
Her siblings were:
Edith E Elmore 1913-1994
Sarah Virginia Fore 1916-1964
Jack Myrrah Byrd 1917-1979
Plina Bagley 1922
John Kieth Byrd 1925
Harry Flood Byrd 1928-1998
Allene, as she was called
by everyone, married Howard
Earl Tompkins July 2 1932 in
Nottoway Co and they had and
she raised 10 children,
starting with their first
child Jean in 1934. By 1944
they had 6 children and she
was pregnant in march of that
year when Howard Earl was
drafted in the U S Army. While
Howard served in Europe she
delivered her 7'th child in
Dec 1944.
A story was told of the
times through the many
letters that Howard had
written back home. The
life they had to live
during the times of the
"Great Depression" and
then WWII can only be a
testament to Allene's
dedication that she showed
throughout her life for
her family.
She is forever remembered.
