John is a veteran of the Mexican War. In 1861, he helped raise a company of infantry and served as Captain of Company F, 12th MS Infantry. He was discharged in 1865.
John served as Mayor and Postmaster of Greenville and owned the Greenville Times Newspaper until 1866 when he sold it to John Seymore McNeily.
John's wife was Miss Mary G. Nutt.
