Lt Co I 47 Ind Inf
Died on the steamer "Lady Franklin" near Memphis, Tenn.

Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - September 19, 1862.
Extracted from letter by Stock Campbell, 47th Regiment at Helena, Arkansas.
September 9, 1862. Lieutenant Martin of our company has been sick for the last few days, but not enough, he says to render him unfit to take care of his men. I humbly believe if the Lieutenant was to die, his ghost would cocee back and lead us boys into battle, so strong is his attachment to us.

Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - February 6, 1863.
Extracted from letter by Stock Campbell, 47th Regiment at Helena, Arkansas.
January 12, 1863. Lieutenant John Martin is with us no more, but has been gathered to the bosom of the God that gave him life. He died of diphtheria on his way down river to join his regiment and was buried in Memphis. His death cast a gloom over the entire company, for he was a friend to all; and there are but few amongst us who have not received some act of kindness from him whilst confined upon our couch of sickness.
