Eligah Barney Ward came to Utah territory as a Mountain Man 30 years before the Pioneers arrived. He lived around the Indians. When the pioneers arrived he became an interpreter for Brigham Young to the Indians. He married a Ute Indian wife and had two daughters. He and James P Anderson was killed, by Chief Blackhawk and his raiders, one mile East of Salina at the mouth of Soldier Canyon while checking on the towns cattle herd. This was the day the Blackhawk War started. The Indians stole the cattle and took them up Salina Canyon. They were never recoverd.
Barney and James were the first to be buried in the Salina Pioneer Cemetery.
