James enlisted in Confederate Service on May 9, 1861 and served as Captain of Company G, 9th MO Infantry. James was discharged on May 5, 1865. At the Battle of Stone River, TN on December 31, 1863, James single handily captured Union Gen. Willich and his staff.
On his way back to Missouri, James stopped and settled in Greenville. He married Miss Mary B. Worthington. Their one known child is Bettie. James is the brother of Thomas M. and Bettie Stone.
