Franklin Delano Smith Sr., 72, of Van Wert, went home to be with his Lord at 4:23 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at Hospice Home of Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was born June 19, 1933, in West Unity, the son of the late Dale Millard and Rachel Hope (Beck) Smith. On April 18, 1987, he married Donna Slane, who survives in Van Wert.
Mr. Smith retired from General Dynamics in Lima, where he was a crane operator. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Church in Van Wert and of the church's Builders Sunday School class. He was a 1951 graduate of Van Wert High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Korean Conflict and beyond (1952-1956). He enjoyed woodworking and photography.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Franklin D. (Brenda) Smith Jr. of Van Wert; two daughters, Rachel H. Smith of Van Wert and Arnelle L. (Ryan) Adam of Convoy; three stepchildren, Kevin (Kaye) Ross of Rockford, Angie (Junior) Schmidt of Decatur, Ind., and Julie (Brian) Potter of Plymouth, Mich.; two brothers, Dale L. Smith Jr. of Chula Vista, Calif., and Frederick W. (Clara) Smith of Van Wert; a sister-in-law, Harriet Smith; three grandchildren, Zachary Smith, Rustin Adam and Allison Smith; eight stepgrandchildren, and a stepgreat-grandson.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lyle M. and Eugene M. Smith, and two sisters, Iris Hope Smith and Ima Rebecca Ann Putman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastors Raymond E. Feeck and W. Clark Williman officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Convoy, with graveside military rites performed by the combined honor units of American Legion Post 178 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803, both in Van Wert.
Viewing hours are from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 12, at the funeral home.
