Mary was daughter of John and Anna Shanahan. She married Thomas Thornton February 23, 1857 in Manitowoc Rapids. Their children were Michael, Mary, Sarah, Matthias, and Catherine.

We regret to announce that the estimable wife of Hon. Thos. Thorton, of the town of Cato, Manitowoc county, departed for “the better land’ on the 11th inst.
The bereft husband and children have the sincere sympathy of many friends in this county. She was one of the best, truest and noblest women it was ever our fortune to become acquainted with, and we cannot refrain from dropping a tear in her memory.
