Note for bio: Private, Co. C, 13th Tennessee Cavalry, per U.S., National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962.

John Leonard had worked away from home for corn, bacon, flour and wearing apparel and had furnished "household goods" at different times contributing about $12.00 per month to his mother's support until his enlistment in the Army. After that it was up to Jacob B. Miller to support the Leonard family. About the first of December 1863 when he was at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, John Leonard became ill with diarrhea. He was treated by the regimental surgeon and then was moved to Nashville, Tennessee to Hospital number 19 which he entered on April 13, 1864. He either was in ward 20 or ward 200. During his sickness he often was visited by William J. Braswell, a corporal of company L, 13th regiment of Tennessee Calvary who said that Private Leonard's main concern was about his mother. He was on roll of his company to December 21, 1863. He died in the hospital at Nashville on April 20, 1864 of chronic diarrhea and consumption.
