Charles William Baum was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on October 19, 1775. He married Susan Moyer, daughter of John Moyer. Mr. Moyer served under the command of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Charles recounted memories of playing in the Pennsylvania woods as a boy and encountering a British soldier. The man threatened Charles with his life if he told anyone of the encounter.

The Baum family settled in Clermont County, Ohio. In 1839, Charles and Susan Baum moved to Carroll Township near the Little Vermilion River. They were pioneer settlers of Vermilion County, Illinois. He was a successful farmer and stock raiser. Mr. Baum was a consistent member of the Methodist Church and it was said that "his faith and good works were known and read of all men". It was said that he gave refuge to family and friends in need. He died at the home of his son, Gideon on March 4, 1871.
