Augustus enlisted in Confederate Service on June 26, 1861 and served as a 1st Lt. in Company I, 22nd MS Infantry. Augustus resigned on April 30, 1863 for medical reasons.
Augustus' wife was G. Wilmot and they lived on Wildwood Plantation located on Rattlesnake Bayou south of Greenville. Their known children are Gerves Burks and Charles Keith. Augustus died in the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878.
