Win Chester Baum was born October 1, 1857 in Carroll Township, Vermilion County, Illinois. He was the youngest child of Samuel Baum and Mary Sandusky Baum and was not four years old when his father died. His grandfather and older brother, Sam were strong male role models for him as a boy and young man.

Win became a well known stock breeder and grain farmer in Illinois. His prize horses and cattle were renowned throughout the state and he was known as a fair and shrewd businessman. He married Frona Molt, daughter of Charles and Keziah Holtzhausen Molt of Wayne County, Illinois in 1885. They were the parents of two daughters, Flora Belle (1883-1950) who married Samuel F. Baldwin, and Nelle Baum (1886-1961). Their only son, Chester Molt Baum, married Nora Helen Gibbs. Mr. Baum built a large family home near Indianola and expanded his fathers' holdings. He became wealthy and prominent in his lifetime.

Win Baum was fatally injured while riding one of his prize horses at the family home on April 19, 1919. The horse threw him and he struck his head on the mailbox near the driveway. Mr. Baum was rushed to Lake View Hospital in Danville, Illinois where emergency brain surgery failed to relieve the head trauma. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Indianola, Vermilion County, Illinois.
