Death Of Mrs. Carrie E. Jones
Long A. Resident of Piatt County:
A Sufferer for Years from Cancer:
Funeral Wednesday:

Mrs. Carrie E. Jones of West Main Street, Monticello, died Monday morning of cancer of the face after severe suffering for many months. She submitted to an operation last year that seemed to promise recovery but the face became much worse after a time and resulted in death.

Mrs. Jones spent the past winter with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Bowyer of Dundee, Minn., returning home when spring had come.

The funeral was held at the M. E. Church, Monticello, at 10 a. m yesterday, Rev. W. E. Bell officiated. Her old friends and neighbors came in goodly numbers to pay their last respects to the memory of one who was always a kind friend to those with whom she was associated.

Her children and grandchildren gathered to do all that could be done to care for their parent in her last hours and lay her remains in the tomb beside the father who had gone before.

Mrs. Jones maiden name was Reynolds. She was born in Rich Hill, Ohio, April 22, 1846. Her husband was Nelson M. Jones, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of this county. They moved to McLean County, Ill in 1864, where they lived for six years south of Bloomington. They moved to Piatt County in 1870 and this county has ever since been their home. Mr. Jones bought a farm east of Bement which later was sold to Lyle A. Moore who yet owns it. The family lived on several different farms in Bement Township before morning to the Benson Farm in East Sangamon where they lived two or three years. Their next move was to Monticello Township where they lived about three miles north of town for a time, then to the Gay Farm on Springtown Road where Mr. Jones died in March 1897. From this farm their only daughter was married and soon after moved to Minnesota where the mother often visited.

The elder sons Frank and Edgar married and the youngest of the four children Roy H and his mother moved to Monticello, buying a house on the East side of the block now compromising the home of John Kirby. After Roy's marriage, Mrs. Jones has lived by herself, the children frequently visiting her.

Frank is a carpenter and lives in Bloomington; Edgar is superintendent of one of the Taylorville schools and Roy is manager of the Monticello Grain Company.

Floral offerings were made by the city council of which Roy is a member, by the Grain Company and friends of the deceased.

Mrs. Jones realized that she could not live long and desiring to die in her own home, firmly resisted the efforts of the children to have her go to a hospital where they thought she could have the special care skilled surgeons could render.

The deceased was the last of her family. Mrs. E. H. Mitchell, a resident of Bement for many years previous to her death, was her sister. Their only surviving brother died as the result of a runaway team some years ago in South Dakota.

All who knew her speak lovingly of her kindness and hospitality and of her willing assistance in time of trouble. The remains were interred in Monticello's beautiful home of the dead.
