Another Old Citizen Passes Away

April 1, 1897

About 9:30 Thursday morning Nelson M. Jones of Stringtown who had been rather feeble for some years, but had never been seriously ill a day in his life, quietly dropped away as he sat in his chair.

For some days he had not been well but was up and about the house. No one was with him at the time except his wife. The neighbors were summoned and the sons teaching in the country and thosse living in Bloomington and Iowa and a daughter in Minnesota and a brother-in-law in Bement were sent for at once.

The sons Edgar and Roy, the teachers came in a few hours. The sons in Iowa, Ross and John wired that owing to the illness of one of them, they could not come. The sons William, Joseph and Frank in Bloomington came that night and the daughter Mrs. Anna Bowyer of near Kinbrae Minnesota wired that she would arrive at noon to-day. The funeral is set for 3 o'clock this afternoon at the family residence two miles northwest of Monticello. Elder J. I. Gunn will have charge of the services. The remains will be laid to rest in the new cemetery by A. B Zybell.

Nelson M. Jones was born October 4, 1816 near Falling Waters, Maryland, being the oldest of a family of nine children. He moved to Licking County, Ohio with his father and family in his early life, settling in the forests of the far west, assissting his father to clear up a home of 200 acres. Healthy, hearty and courageous, at the early age of 22 years he married Christina Fry a member of another pioneer family and started out on the voyage of life for himself. To this union were born seven children of whom William and Joseph now live in Bloomington and Ross and John in Clay County, Iowa. The others with their mother have long since passed before. In May 1861 he was again married to Miss Carrie E. Reynolds of Homer, Licking County, Ohio and in the fall of 1863 removed to Bloomington, Ill. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. Frank is married and lives in Bloomington; Edgar S. married and lives near Monticello; Roy the youngest and at home. Anna, the only daughter married Robert Bowyer and lives near Kinrae, Minn.

Nelson M. Jones bought a farm east of Bement abour 1869, now owned by L. A. Moore and since then he has resided in Bement and Monticello Townships. For several years he has lived at their present home. He was in his last year and had always been undenyably healthy and hearty. He remarked that he never had taken medicine. His death was almost instantaneous. He had been confined to the house for about two weeks but not confined to his bed. He called his wife to come to him; he pointed upward and fell back in her arms. Life had gone. His feeble condition has made him a heavy care to his wife for several years.
