Not known when he arrived in the United States, where he worked as a laborer.

He enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 30 June 1870.

At the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was in Frederick Benteen's Company H. He was in the hilltop fight on what is now known as Reno Hill, where the troopers of Benteen, Reno and Weir held off the indians. He was wounded during that battle, but apparently a minor wound.
