David Wright Newby, a Panama City Beach resident for 47 years, died on Sept. 3, 2009. He was 74 years old.
Mr. Newby was born in Dothan, Ala., on Oct. 3, 1935 to Mansel and Mae Merritt Newby.
Mr. Newby relocated to Panama City in 1962 working for Lewis Bear Distribution Company for many years. In 1973, he and his wife, Melva Bowers Newby, opened Newby's Convenience Store and Gift Shop, catering to and building on the tourism industry that was just beginning in Panama City Beach. With this growth, both David and Melva worked to open Newby's Liquors and Newby's Package and Lounge on Thomas Drive. With the success of these businesses, the couple continued to create new entertainment options for tourists and locals both in Panama City Beach and Panama City.
Mr. Newby was preceded in death by his parents, Mansel Newby and Mae Merritt Newby, and his loving and devoted wife, Melva Bowers Newby.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Newby and her husband, John McVeigh; two grandchildren, William and Wesley Pickenpaugh; his beloved brother, Edward Newby and wife, Jean; his sister, Pasty Hyatt and her husband, Robert; and niece and nephew, Lynn Davis and her husband, Wendell, and David C. Newby and his wife, Beth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Beach Care Services or the Bay County Humane Society.
