SPEARMAN - Virginia Buchanan Cates, 84, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Hansford Cemetery with Burl Buchanan officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Cates was born May 29, 1924, in Hansford County. She married Pat Cates on June 9, 1953, in Spearman. He preceded her in death in 1984.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo, started Spearman Music Club in 1955, was a former member of Hansford County Historical Commission, a member of Daughters of the American Republic and taught Sunday school for many years at First United Methodist Church in Spearman and San Jacinto United Methodist in Amarillo.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Atkinson of Lipscomb; a son, Charles Pat Cates of Austin; two sisters, Louise Vaught of Amarillo and Edna Bassel of Spearman; a granddaughter, Cristine Raincrow of Joshua; a grandson, Jim Clements of Amarillo; and six great-grandsons, Justin Hines and Shawn and Joe Bates, all of Joshua, and Kolton, Derrek and Tanner Clements of Amarillo.

The family suggests memorials be to Alzheimer's Unit, Coldwater Manor, 1111 Beaver Road, Stratford, TX 79084.
