After a brief illness at Hospice of East Texas, Dr. Paul Elwood Huchel entered the kingdom of God, Nov. 26, 2008. A graveside service for family and friends will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Rose Hill Cemetery, in Tyler, Texas under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, with the Rev. Mr. Ted Welty presiding.

Doc," as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah. A standout football player at Box Elder High in Brigham City, Doc and his brother, Dean, would often ride horseback into the mountains of Utah where they would camp for days at a time. After graduating from the St. Louis University Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., Doc secured his post-graduate degree and training in orthodontia from The University of Texas Dental School in Houston. While in school in St. Louis, he met and fell in love with his future wife, Jacqueline Meador. They were married at ''The Little Church Around the Corner" Episcopal Church in New York City on June 17, 1945. After being stationed in Japan in the Air Force during the Allied occupation, Doc and Jackie returned to the states and eventually moved to Tyler in 1955, which became their permanent home and where Doc practiced orthodontics until his retirement in 1987.

Doc inspired his family with his love for life and ability to find humor in almost any situation. A man of few words, he was gifted with his hands, particularly his ability to take apart and re-assemble virtually any piece of equipment or mechanical object. During his career as an orthodontist, he secured a patent on his invention of an elliptical dental x-ray machine which was a significant advance in dental radiological technology at the time. A big, strapping man who loved horses and the outdoors, he often stayed up late at night sewing or crocheting for one of his three daughters, to whom he was devoted. Holidays and cooking for his family also brought him tremendous delight.

Doc demonstrated his love for the Tyler community through a variety of service organizations, some of which included Rotary Club, Texas Dental Society of Smith County, Smith County Volunteer Sheriffs Department, the Salvation Army and Shriners. Beyond membership in any particular organization, he simply found great joy in helping those in need. He and Jackie were long time members of the Chapel Class at Marvin United Methodist Church. His favorite avocation was operating the Salvage Center at the old train depot, where he found "homes" for appliances and things of all kinds that the railroad had discarded.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jacqueline Meador Huchel.

Doc is survived by daughters, Debra Billups and husband, Chip, Barbara Clifton and Paula Yarbrough and husband, Trey; grandchildren, Jacqueline Cameron Billups, of Washington, D.C., James Reiley Clifton Jr. and wife, Megan, of Richmond, Va., Pippin Meador Clifton, of Columbia, S.C., Herbert Amos "Ty" Yarbrough IV, of Tyler, and Hallie Huchel Yarbrough, of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
