Thomas Denton was a son of Isom Denton and Elizabeth Lincoln, making him a first cousin once removed of President Abraham Lincoln. He had a twin brother, Washington Denton. On January 28, 1864, he married Mahala A. Floyd, daughter of Alexander Floyd and Fanny Boston, in Harrison County, Indiana. Shortly afterward, he joined the Civil War to fight for the Union. He traveled with his older brother David to Jeffersonville, Indiana; David enlisted on September 22, 1864, and Thomas the next day. Thomas was assigned to Company E of the 9th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. He was discharged on November 24, 1864, and on November 29, 1864, he died of typhoid fever near Nashville, Tennessee, at twenty-one years of age.

Thomas and Mahala's daughter, Lizzie, was born six weeks later, on January 12. Mahala, only sixteen years old, applied for a widow's pension, with her father Alexander signing as her guardian. On November 1, 1866, in Harrison County, David married Mahala. They never had any children together, but David raised Lizzie as his own.
