Lester H. Binnie, 90, a resident of Timbercrest Retirement Community, died Sunday, March 15, 1998 at Timbercrest Healthcare Center. He was born April 23, 1907 at Norcatur, KS to Earl L. and Bernice (Wertenberger) Binnie.
He married Doris Ireland Sept. 11, 1932 and she died in 1984. His second marriage was to Ruth (Miller) Kraning Sept. 1, 1985 and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1994.
Mr. Binnie was a 1925 graduate of Laketon High School. He graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in horticulture, and received his M.S. degree in 1961 from the University of Colorado.
He retired in 1967 after a long career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Soil Conservation Service in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. Following retirement. he authored many articles and books on his family history and local history. He recorded and published names and dates from the cemetery stones of Kosciusko County and northern Wabash County. He was the author of "Early Brethren Families in the Eel River Congregation".
Mr. Binnie was a member of the North Manchester Historical Society and the Soil Conservation Society. He was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons - Larry J. Binnie of Greenwood, IN, David E. Binnie of Pittsburgh, PA, and Stanley W. Binnie of Waukesha, WI; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Donald (Sherrill) Barr of Waverly, Iowa; and a brother, Rex Binnie of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Friends may call Friday, March 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, and also two hours prior to the service on Saturday at Timbercrest Chapel.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 21, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at Timbercrest Chapel, with Dr. William Hemmig and Rev. Joan Deeter officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester.
