Professor. He graduated from Harvard in 1822, and became head of the Mayhew School. Moving to Philadelphia in 1838, he became professor of "belles lettres" at the High School of Philadelphia, later known as Central High School. Because of his success at the high school, he received an honorary doctor of laws (LL.D.) from Marshall College. In 1843 he concentrated on writing school text books on history and English. One was entitled A Pictorial History of the World. Another text was The American Speaker, which presented rules for and exercises in public speaking as well as passages of poetry and prose to develop students' reading and recitation skills. He edited a magazine called The Young People's Book which was intended to teach young people American tradition and culture and was published by Louis A. Godey.
