ALLEN BATES THRIFT 1892-1956 - the son of the late Washington and Fenton Thrift, formerly of Oldhams, Va., died at his home in Washington, D.C. August 8, 1956, after a lingering illness. He was a resident of the Northern Neck the greater part of his life, removing later to Washington where he established a home from which he died. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Janie K. Thrift; one son, Allen B. Thrift, Jr. of Washington; one daughter, Mrs. Frances T. Lloyd, also of Washington, and two grandchildren of the same city; two brothers, Jake Thrift of Ellerson, Va., and Walter Thrift of Mundy Point. A funeral service was conducted at Totuskey Baptist Church on Friday afternoon, Rev. Jesse Clay officiated, with interment in the nearby cemetery. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, later left at the alter in his memory. The writer of this sketch, who knew the deceased from early boyhood, during all those years never knew or heard aught against his character. He was employed for several years in positions of trust; all his former employers held him in the highest esteem as to his straight forward manner and fair dealing. Faultlessly generous and honest to family, relatives, and nighbors, emphasising always the golden rule. A rich legacy left to survivors for emulation. "Think of me as withdrawn into the dimess, Yours still, you mine. Remember all the best of our past moments and forget the rest And so to where I wait, come gently on." FRIEND. Village Va. August 12, 1956.
