Sarah left her birthplace in Kentucky about the age of 19 and settled with her brother Thomas and sister Mary in Platte City, Missouri. In late 1850, she and Mary relocated to St. Joseph, Missouri where Sarah met and married Dr. John Black Howard. The Howards remained in St. Joseph where they raised their children and John was a respected physician. By 1889, 4 of their children had moved to Kansas City and John and Sarah were persuaded to retire and move there as well. In July, 1892 Dr. Howard suffered a paralysis that led to his death early the next year. Less than 9 months later, Sarah died at her home, 211 Brooklyn Avenue, Kansas City. She was living there with her daughter Dixie and son-in-law William A. Wyatt. Death followed a surgical operation, possibly for a cancerous growth.
