Milton H. Hernley, 74, of Wateroak Drive, Palm Bay, Fla., formerly of Scottdale, passed away early Christmas morning, Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in the Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. Milt was born in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, April 17, 1925, a son of the late Christian R. Hernley, who passed away July 8, 1963, and Anna Maude Hudson, who passed away Jan. 31, 1972. Milt retired from General Signal in 1983, where he worked as a field superintendent. He began working years before as a brick mason, using this trade and knowledge throughout his entire work career. A former longtime resident of the Scottdale area, Milt married his second wife, the former Shelby Jean Kissick, on Jan. 9, 1982. In July of 1987, they moved to Burlington, Ky., until his wife's retirement in 1992. They then purchased a home and relocated to Palm Bay, Fla., where he resided until his death. Milt was a life member of the Scottdale B.P.O. Elks Lodge #777, a former member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, and a member of the L.O.O. Moose Lodge in Sebastian, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as an engineer in the 258th Engineering Battalion C. He served as a mine sweeper, built bridges, and transported military personnel by boat to Normandy for the landing of the Battle of the Bulge. Milt enjoyed family, friends, golf, travel, sports, and never met a stranger. Most of all, he was a good husband, parent, and grandparent. He had a big generous heart and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Milt is survived by his loving family, his wife of 17 years, Shelby Jean Kissick Hernley of Palm Bay; two sons, Larry Hernley and wife, Sharon, and Jock Hernley and wife, Joni; and a daughter, Sherry Hernley Murray, all of Scottdale; a stepson, John Tomlin of Palm Bay; a stepdaughter, Judy McDonald of Burns, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, Randy, Jeff, Nicholas, Jesse, and Marc Hernley, and Jessica Murray, all of Scottdale, Heather Coleman of Pensacola, Fla., Krissie Hernley of Tallahassee, Fla., Shawn Asher of Dickson, Tenn., Katrina and Andrew McDonald of Burns, Tenn., and Leigh Tomlin of Memphis, Tenn; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Larue Johnson and Anna Mary Ross and husband, Pat, all of Scottdale. In addition to his parents, Milt was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Lambing Hernley, on Feb. 9, 1981; two infant sons; an infant daughter; and four brothers, Bill Hernley, on Feb. 15, 1943, Lloyd Hernley on Dec. 21, 1975, Chris R. Hernley, on Feb. 14, 1991, and Lee Hernley, on Nov. 13, 1997. Personalized arrangements for a memorial service and burial in Scottdale are pending and will be announced at a later date by the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, (724) 887-5300.
