The Friday Union (newspaper) Albia, Iowa, Dec 11, 1903

Died at the home of her son, Daniel May, about four miles east of Oskaloosa, Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 1903, at 6:15 a.m., Catherine, widow of Samuel May, of old age and la grippe, aged 79 years, 10 months and 29 days.

Catherine Brubaker was a daughter of John Brubaker and was born at Little York, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania on Jan. 2, 1824. At the age of ten years she removed with her parents to Ashland, Ohio. She was joined in wedlock to Samuel May on the 28 of Jan. 1847. To this union were born 10 children, four of whom have preceded her to the better land. The six who remain are; John of Spokane, Washington, Daniel of near Oskaloosa, Elmer about two miles west of town, Mrs. Levi Harding of Wichita, Kan., Mrs. Joseph Vance of Des Moines and Mrs. O.E. Smith of near Pekay.

Mr. and Mrs. May came west to this state in 1857, locating on the old May homestead on the Oskaloosa road about three miles north of town. Her husband passed away August. 6, 1876, the surviving children grew into manhood or womanhood, married and left the old farm, but Mrs. May continued to cling to the old farm till last May when she was finally induced to go and make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Smith, not far distant. About two weeks before her death she went on a visit to her son, Daniel and was taken down with her last illness.

Having resided here for over forty-five years Mrs. May was quite well known and highly esteemed. In 1860 she became connected to the Dunkard church, aside from the children, her death is mourned by one brother and three sisters; William Brubaker of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Kebekah Sherrick of Indianola, Mrs. John Switzer of Pekay and Mrs. Daniel Brubaker of Spring, Ill.
