Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov 30 at 1 p.m.in the Auburn Ward Chapel, with Bp. Demar Hillyard conducting, for Marie Griffin Cranney, 65, well known Auburn resident, who died Wednesday evening, Nov 27 at the hospital in Afton following a prolonged illness. Burial was in the Afton City Cemetery.
She was born March 24, 1903 at Ogden, Utah, the only child of Herbert J. and Pauline Norseth Griffin. Her father was killed in a train wreck in December of the same year. Marie's mother later married George W. Gaymon, and a son was born to that union, Claud I. Gaymon.
When Marie was about nine years old, her mother passed away, leaving her and her half-brother with Mr Gaymon. He soon passed on, and then they were left orphans. An uncle, H.L. Griffin, was made Marie's guardian, and she went to live in his home while Claud went to live with her mother's brother.
When Marie became old enough to attend high school, her uncle enrolled her in St. Joseph Academy in Ogden.
Later, Marie's mother's sister, Margaret Wind, took her to their home in Omaha, Neb. to live, where she attended business college, and after completing the course found employment in Omaha and lived there until 1921. She then moved back to Ogden and worked for the Ogden Paint Oil and Gas Co., and was working there when she met her future husband, Ciril Cranney,, who was working for the railroad as a brakeman. Ciril and Marie were married June 24, 1922 at Brigham City, Utah, and made their home in Ogden, where a daughter, Pauline Joyce, was born. In April 1925 Ciril left his railroad job, and they moved to the ranch at Auburn in Star Valley. Three more children, Edward William, Joan Lorraine and Janet Marie were born to them. When Marie's half-brother. Claud, was about 13 years old, Marie and Ciril obtained permission for him to come and live with them, and he made his home with them until he passed away in April 1936. She also helped raise two grandchildren.
Shortly after she moved to Auburn, Marie became active in the LDS Church, and worked in ward positions. She was a gifted musician with a fine voice, and an excellent cook, and was a lot of help in planning and working on ward parties. She served as YWMIA president, primary and Sunday School teacher, choir leader, and other capacities.
During her lifetime, Marie was an ardent worker in the American Leagion Auxiliary, serving as president and secretary of the local post unit, and also as district president. As a special tribute to her, the ladies of the post met in special session recently and named the Star Valley post the "Marie Cranney Post".
Mary always welcomed friends and relatives into her home, where they enjoyed her fine cooking.
She became very ill about July 26, 1968, and entered the Salt Lake LDS Hospital on July 29, and underwent surgery on Aug 1. She was never able to regain her strength. Ciril brought her home on Aug 25, and after that she ws hospitalized at Afton for 37 days before she passed away on Nov 27.
She is survived by her husband; one son, Edward, Salt Lake City, Utah; and three daughters, Mrs Patrick (Joyce) Netherly, Cokeville, Wyo.; Mrs L.D. (Joan) Nield, Afton; and Mrs Richard (Janet) Gabler, Salt Lake City; and 12 grandchildren.
