The Ely Ancestry:
Ambrose Kitchell Ely, 47 West 57th St., New York, eldest son of Epaphras Cook Ely and Julia Ann Kitchell, was born at Livingston, Essex County, New Jersey, on the Ely homestead farm January 31, 1823.
He first engaged in mercantile pursuits as an assistant to his father in the hide and leather business in Ferry St., New York, and after familiarizing himself with the business accepted a postition with Mssrs. Lapham, Corse & Co., at 18 Ferry St. Some years later he became a member of the firm of Thorne, Watson & Co., and remained with that firm during ten years.
Since his retirement from the firm of Thorne, Watson & Co., Mr. Ely has continued in business on his own account at 103 Gold St., corner of Frankfort St., New York.
