Eugene Wallace Short, 85, formerly of Granite City, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born April 10, 1921, in Woodville Township in Greene County to Kenneth and Marvel (Seger) Short. He was raised in Carrollton. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received three Bronze Service Stars and the Bronze Star Medal. He was employed for many years at the Granite City Army Depot and was transferred to Tooela, Utah, where he retired. He returned to the area and became employed for a short time as an inspector for Moody Corp. He married the former Geraldine Feyerabend in 1946, and together they had two children. They shared 34 years together before her death in 1980. He then married Opal Barnhart, who died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Jean Short of Springfield, Ill.; two granddaughters, Shannon Short and Christina Marquez; two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Gabrielle; a sister, Harriet Zwolinski of Havana, Ill., and her daughter, Tommie Ann Gard, of Westminster, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Roger Short, in 1981.

Visitation was from 10 a.m. until services at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Edward Campbell officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, with Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites. Memorials may be given to the Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville.
