Mr. Soules was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Oakland, Ore., to parents James and Beth (Johnson) Soules. On June 7, 1947, he married Dacotah "Coty" Soules in Dickinson, N.D.
He served in the U.S. Army between the years of March 1944 and Dec. 1945. During World War II, he served as a first lieutenant as a P-51 Mustang Fighter with the 41st Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group of the 5th Army Air Corp in the South Pacific Theater. He flew 100 combat missions. When he was discharged he was ranked a captain.
Mr. Soules graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. After the service, he was the business manager for the Montana Oliver Tractor Statewide Distributorship. In 1963, he and his family moved to Warm Springs from Billings, Mont., to take a position as Service Unit Director for the Indian Health Services. In 1976 the family moved to Madras. He retired from Indian Health Service in 1984.
Mr. Soules was a lifetime member of the Elks and Masonic lodges in Dickinson, N.D., and a member of the 41st Fighter Squadron Association.
Survivors include his wife, Coty Soules of Madras; children, Greg J. Soules of Bismark, N.D., Garet "Gary" A. Soules of Prineville, Jim H. Soules of Prineville, Richard L. Soules of Portland, and Rebecca Curnutt of Portland; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ward Soules.
Funeral services were held Jan. 12, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel. Burial was at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Association, 1650 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 190, Portland, OR 97212.
