Luther R. Billings was born in Quebec; Canada in 1840. At an early age, he and his family moved to Sanilac County Michigan and settled in the village of Speaker. On October 2, 1861 he married Christianna Groat in Port Huron (St. Clair Co.), Michigan. On August 7, 1862 at the age of 22, he enlisted in the Union Army as a private. On August 22, he mustered into "K" Company of Michigan's 22nd Infantry. Captain Alexander G. Galbraith of Lexington, Michigan was his commanding officer. Luther was accidentally killed on December 31, 1864 at Decatur, Alabama by the explosion of a shell. He was orignally buried at Decatur but his body was later exhumed and moved to the Corinth National Cemetery (Alcorn County); Corinth, Mississippi (Section B; Plot 3211).
