American professional baseball player. Edward FitzGerald spent 12 years in the major leagues, mainly as a catcher and back-up pitcher from 1948 until 1960. After college, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return home after the war, he played for a couple minor league teams until signing on with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948. In 1953 he began playing for the Washington Senators, and finally in 1959 played for the Cleveland Indians until a broken thumb ended his career as a player. He went on to coach for the Cleveland Indians, the Kansas City Athletics, and the Minnesota Twins before his final job in baseball as manager of the Fresno Giants of the California League. In 1967 he returned home to his wife and 6 children and worked for the State of California for almost 20 years before retiring in 1985.
