Eddie L. Harvey, a lifetime resident of Bartholomew County, 46 years at Newbern, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at Columbus Regional Hospital after a three year illness. He was born January 20, 1932, in Hope, Ind.

Eddie graduated from Clifford High School in 1950 and took several classes at IUPUC. He served in the Indiana National Guard for a year and went to work at Cummins Engine Co. in May of 1950.

Eddie joined the Air Force in 1951 and served as a staff sergeant in the Korean War. He served as a cryptographer for two years and flew as a courier from Missauwa, Japan, to Korea many times. He was honorably discharged in 1956.

He came back to Columbus and returned to Cummins Engine Co. where he worked as an inspector on the V-8 block line and as a manufacturing coordinator until April of 1987, when he retired after 37 years. He worked part-time as a computer engraver at Columbus Awards and Engraving and also worked at Antique Restoration and Hoosier Parts.

He married Carolyn A. Lambert June 25, 1960, at Taylorsville Methodist Church.

Mr. Harvey was an avid table tennis player. He and a buddy won the Far East Doubles Championship Tournament in 1954, while he was in Japan. Since then, he played for years in the White River Parks Tournaments, senior tournaments and many league tournaments in Columbus and at Cummins. He was one of the founders of the Columbus Area Table Tennis Association and stayed active in it through 2005. He played softball and golf, pitched horseshoes and fished and played several stringed instruments. He loved camping with his family and many good friends. He was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

He was an active member of Newbern United Methodist Church for 45 years, had served on several church committees and was a former trustee there.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years; a son,of Vernon; a daughter,of Hope; four grandchildren; a brother of Hope; and several much-loved nieces and nephews to whom he was always close.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna Stater and Archie F. Harvey; a sister, Letha Ackerman; a brother, Vernon "Bub" Harvey; infant siblings, Billie and Betty; his grandparents; and a beloved niece, Jennifer Murphy Dailey.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Norman Funeral Home (www.normanfuneralhome.net)at Hope with the Rev. Dr. Morris Hannah officiating.(Columbus Republic 3 Dec 2008) Burial was at Hope Moravian Cemetery, and military graveside rites were conducted by Bartholomew County Veteran's Color Guard. Pallbearers were Larry Clark, Earl Baute, Bob Sluder, Bruce Grey, Ken Chandler and Joe and Jerry Harvey. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Ralston, Dan Ackerman, Rex and Darren Lambert and Casey Murphy.
